In October 16, 2024, the Healthy Philippines Alliance launched its “Campaign for Food Warning Labels” to tackle the issue of unhealthy diets, a chief risk factor to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers, chronic kidney disease. NCD incidence continues to rise and is the leading cause of death in the country and worldwide. The campaign coincides with the NCD Alliance’s TIME TO LEAD Movement to call on policymakers to accelerate action to combat NCDs.
We believe a mandatory policy that will implement front-of-pack food warning labels on packaged food products will effectively empower Filipino consumers to know what’s in their food and be warned of the health risks associated with products high in sugar, sodium, and fats. This, in turn, can guide consumers to shift to healthier food options, and eventually encourage food manufacturers to reformulate their products.
